Day 06 Deogarh – Devi Garh

This morning we will cycle to Ranakpur Temples. One of the biggest and the most important Jain temples in India, the extremely beautiful Ranakpur complex is well worth a visit if you are anywhere near Jodhpur or Udaipur. Built in the 15th century, Ranakpur temples are very well preserved and one of the most holy places for Jain pilgrimage. These temples lie in a remote and peaceful valley of the Aravali range. The main temple, dating back to 1439, is called the Chaumukha Temple or the “Four-faced temple” and is dedicated to Adinath — the first of Jain teachers. Beautiful sculpture and grand structures mark the glory of this place. It has 29 halls supported by 1,444 carved pillars, none of which are alike. The play of light and shade on the minutely curved figures leaves a tantalizing effect. The temple was erected on the top of a hill on a raised platform and covered an area of about 4,460 metres. Within the complex are two other Jain temples dedicated to Neminath and Parasnath. After visiting Ranakpur temples, we will drive to Devi Garh, a heritage hotel housed in an 18th-century palace in the village of Delwara. It was the royal residence of the rulers of Delwara principality, from the middle of the 18th century until the mid-20th century. Devi Garh is a stunning hill-top fort palace that has been fantastically restored into a luxurious, sophisticated and romantic retreat. Nestled in the Aravali hills, 28 kilometers away from the bustle of Udaipur, this all suite luxury resort offers all modern amenities while conserving the ancient exterior.

Day 07 Devi Garh

Today we will explore the interesting countryside around Devi Garh. We will begin with the nearby 14th Century Jain temples which formed the inspiration for the famous temples of Dilwara near Mount Abu. We will pass through the Delwara village that retains its culture and authentic style with most of its inhabitants pursuing traditional agriculture as a profession. We will cycle to the small lake of Bapparawal nestled in the scenic Aravali hills. We will also visit the temple complexes of Eklingji and Nagda. The interesting little quaint village of Eklingji has a number of ancient temples. On the way to Eklingji are the ruins of the ancient city of Nagda, where exquisitely carved temples, both Hindu (10th century) and Jain (15th century) are a treat for the eyes. These temples have intricate stone carvings and are in close proximity to a lotus pond. The cycling part of the tour ends today.
